694: Monty’s Brewery | Masquerade

The brewery: “Monty’s Brewery is based just a short distance from the ancient castle town of Montgomery, on the Powys - Shropshire border……….It was in January 2009 when the first casks were produced. It was only the third brew before Monty’s Sunshine started to get the recognition it still enjoys today, winning the “Darlington Spring Thing CAMRA Beer Festival”. It has since won numerous prizes, including Finalist Champion Beer of Britain.” The beer: “A golden ale with tropical fruit flavours and a distinctive hop aroma…..We set out to create a great tasting gluten free beer that everyone can enjoy and in 2017 we improved the recipe not compromising on the aroma or taste. We think you'll love it even more!” Liked this offering from Monty’s too. I didn’t find it too fruity and another good summer ale. Worth noting that it’s gluten free too. 4.6% A.B.V.

The sweetness was very subtle. As often with these type of beers it would go down particularly well on a warm summers night, served a little colder. June 2021

601: Black Sheep | Holy Grail

The Brewery: “In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery from reclaimed equipment in the very same town, Masham…..Paul is the Black Sheep.” The Beer: “Famously “tempered over burning witches”, Holy Grail was originally created to commemorate the 30 th anniversary of Monty Python, and is a much-loved part of our bottled beer collection. Some 19 years on, The beer has been given a new lease of life with the recent reunion and the subsequent Spamalot tour…….Monty Python’s Holy Grail is a light golden beer with a fresh, zesty taste and a long crisp bitter finish. It’s brewed with a mixture of hops, including WGV, which gives the beer a light fruity nose. It’s a real tongue pleaser.” I tried the bottled version of this in 2016 and am not a great fan to b...

Black Sheep – Holy Grail

What they say: “This brilliant and bold addition to our flock was created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of one of our finest comedic exports - the Monty Python crew!Years later and Holy Grail is still going strong. With more hops than a killer rabbit, it's a full-flavoured golden ale with a distinctively fruity flavour followed by the Black Sheep signature dry finish. Be warned, this beer has been tempered over burning witches! Only joking.” I am a big fan of Black Sheep so was curious about this, but unsurprisingly given the above it wasn’t one of my favourites 4.7% A.B.V. The 152nd beer I’ve tried this year and the 404th to go in the Archive. December 2016
